Hi
Do any of the ladies who have had the gastric sleeve still color or treat your hair, or did you refrain due to potential hair loss?
Thanks,
Sue
The hair loss we experience is due to nutrition. There is nothing we can do to existing hair that will cause hair loss. Breakage yes loss no. You can color or highlight it this will not speed no slow hair loss. Once you start losing hair you may want to consider no highlighting the new hair as it will not be as strong as before surgery and highlighting uses bleach which is harsh on the hair. I was a highlighted blonde prior to surgery. I opted to tint back to my natural color until after I had shed and regrown whatever hair was gonna come out. I am kinda liking the light brown and it is a lot less maintenance. Also for ladies with thin or fine hair, coloring hair will cause the hair shaft to swell and appear thicker. So even if you just color to your natural color or add a clear color gloss this may help your hair appear fuller while you go through your changes. Hope this helps.
i agree with busybee. if you're coloring your hair with dye, i don't think it's going to make a difference (it hasn't for me). but i might hold off on the bleaching if i did that.
i'm about 6 months out, give or take, and the hair loss has slowed considerably(it started at about 3 months post-op). don't worry! once your nutrition levels get back to normal, your hair will grow back!
I lost hair at 3 mo and it continues to be thin, dr. told me that the hair loss is due from the shock to our bodies from the anethesia, and surgery. I have colored my hair and it has helped to make the hair look thicker. there is also a product that colors the hair but washes out when wet. (just don't go out in the rain)! I color my hair about every 5-6 wks, no problems what so ever.
Hello Sue,I didn't intentionally wait but once i thought about it I was losing it and that was 2 -3 months out so I waited being scared all of it would fall out, Also I had complications and didn't eat or drink for the first month( NO PROTEIN), then went home on IV nutrients for 3 weeks and then started my process and not much protein due to vomitting but I do suggest you wait a few months and take vitamins and biotin and PROTEIN. hope this helps and didn't scare you.
I had some hair loss in the beginning and it was a little concerning to me since my hair was thin to begin with due to the diabetes and meds I had (notice I said, "had") to take. Now it's better and I had it colored with a few streaks, however; I'm not going to highlight it again for a while. The sun might be too harsh for the highlighting now and cause more damage. I'm going to have it colored and see how that works for the summer. I feel the hair loss was a small price to pay for the benefits of the surgery. Good luck!
Hello, I'm almost a year after my sleeve had been done. My hair loss started about 3-4 months after surgery. I'm diabetic type 1 on an insulin pump. I knew that the surgery will not "cure" my diabetes. It helped dramatically to reduce amount of insulin and other meds I was taking. Hair loss was quite frightening at the beginning. I went to my Chinese medical practitioner and started drinking her herbal teas. Hair loss stopped in 1 week. I have never stopped highlighting my hair. If anything the process and a clever haircut helped to hide my hair loss. I hope that will help a little. I believe that in time all will go back to how it was before.
I started losing a LOT of hair in February. I have a co-worker who had gastric bypass a few years ago and she said she NEVER lost any hair!! I asked the secret. She said she takes the supplement called BIOTIN every day. I started taking it too, and within a few weeks, I went from losing a handful (or 2!!) of hair with showers to only a few strands. Amazing! Best of luck to you.
