    Lightbulb New to this site

Hi my name is Carol and I'm just looking for some pre surgery and post surgery information that might be helpful. Did any of you have to go on the liquid diet two weeks prior? I read that two days was the norm but my surgeon wants me on in two week prior.

Welcome, each patient is different and each doctor does it differently. There isn’t really a norm but some patients could have the same or similar pre-op diet. Just like you will find many different post-op diets. Each doctors approach to the care before and after can be so different. I had a shake for two meals than small amount of lean protein and side of non starchy veggies for one. Than clear liquids for 4 days before. Started process two weeks before surgery. Than after I was on clear liquids for two weeks than 3rd week started protein shake and full liquids then 4th week added cream soup and continued full liquid diet. Then fifth week I started on purée foods. Then 6th week continued purée or soft foods. Then next week worked on regular foods by chewing small bites very good before swallowing. I had trouble transitioning to purée foods I did full liquids for at least a extra few days. Good luck to you and follow your doctors plan it’s important and will be worth it. Best decision I ever made. 8EC63CD8-3773-4AF4-8DE0-381BD626FD01.jpeg79910EFF-5A42-480E-89C1-8FE5EC050320.jpeg

I was required to do a 2 week liquid pre-op diet. I lost 19 on the liquid diet. The first couple days were difficult then you get used to it.

That's what mine originally said also and I backed out of the surgery. When they asked me why I had backed out, I told them there was no way I could do tat for 2 weeks, ....if there was I wouldn't need weight loss surgery. They said that there must have been a misunderstanding and said it was 2 weeks low carb high protein 4 days all liquid. I'd ask and recheck their info. Hope this helps

My doc also wants a two week liquid prior to the surgery date. I'm just praying I can get through two weeks of liquid. The reason the doc gave was to shrink your liver and to place your body into Ketosis. From what I have been reading on this forum an don line the doctors are different in what they want their patients to do. Wishing you the best of luck!

I had the 2 week liquid diet with 48 hours of clear liquids prior to surgery. Following surgery I had another 2 weeks of liquids before moving to pureed foods. It's a slow process but your Doctor knows best and it's all designed to help you get ready for surgery then promote healing and the best outcome post surgery. The excitement of knowing the surgery is coming makes the pre surgery time go fast and for me the fear of damaging my new stomach made it easy post surgery.

I did two weeks -- its to be sure your liver is surgery-ready... my doctor had me on 800 calories a day, 4 protein shakes, 2 soups and 1 bar. It was great, after the 3rd day -- headache is normal....but I felt very ready for surgery.

Every doctor is different, but mine has me on 9 days of liquid diet, then 1 day of clear liquids the day before surgery. Good luck with yours!

Mine wanted me to lose 10 kgs on the Optifast diet (3 shakes or soups or bars per day). This was around 6 weeks before the surgery.

I actually did 2 bars and one small meal of lean protein and green vege at night and still lost the weight without losing my mind. He only wanted me to have a liquid meal the night before surgery. He was very happy with the state of my liver during surgery - good news.

Post surgery he wanted me on clear fluids while in hospital (3.5 days) which was nasty! Then full fluids for the rest of the first 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of puree and then 2 weeks of soft foods. I found I was ready earlier to move through each stage. I'm now on full foods and loving it! Good luck!

The pre op diets range from long to short to none at all. It is all about surgeon preference.
